How to Celebrate a Friendship Milestone

About 18 months ago, over a few wines at my best friend’s 30th, I realised that we were only a year and a half off our 20 year best-friendship anniversary. Now, I know that’s not really a thing, but who cares. When there’s talk of a holiday and champagne and endless cheeseboards you just suck it up and make it a thing.

My best friend and I met the first day of secondary school when we were 11 years old and both starting at a new school. We instantly became friends and over the next five years we shared a love of giggling hysterically, talking on the phone, shopping, and JTT. We also had many differences, but we mostly ignored them or navigated our way around them in the friendship.

Five years in, she and her family moved a 3 hour drive away – not the easiest thing for two 16 year olds to deal with before the age of unlimited texting and all the things that make long-distance friendships so much better these days. But we stayed close, and even after both of us coming and going over the years I think it’s fair to say we are now closer than ever.

We lead totally different live – she’s married and the mother of twin six year olds and loves her small town life (yup, she’s still in that town three hours away) and I’m up in the big city doing my (mostly) single thing. But she’s like a sister to me and the fact that we’ve stayed friends for twenty years is truly something to celebrate.

So we decided on Queenstown – somewhere neither of us had been and somewhere we were keen to explore. And we had so.much.fun. I’ll do another post on Queenstown soon, but for now, let’s just focus on the celebration. As you can see, we did it in style. With lots of champagne.
