Books I read

A book about love, heartbreak, travel, identity, and the “accidents” of fate, Just One Day shows us how sometimes in order to get found, you first have to get lost. . . and how often the people we are seeking are much closer than we know.

Over the last year I’ve read more YA novels than I ever have previously. I’m not sure why – maybe it’s that need to lose myself in something simple, easy to read, and lacking in complexity. To be honest though, the YA I’ve read recently have completely taken me by surprise and I would say they’re anything but simple.

Sure, the writing isn’t overly technical nor are the concepts, but for the most part they’re filled with multi-layered characters, complex storylines, complicated relationships, and huge moral dilemmas that keep me thinking long after I’ve powered down the Kindle.

Just One Day is a beautifully woven story about a day of chance meetings and young love, followed by a year of ‘what ifs’ and an ending that left me wanting more.

Things I Liked:

The characters were convincing. They spoke and acted like 18 year olds and their interactions with each other were authentic.

The storyline was predictable – but not. There were no huge shocking twists, but there were a few delightful moments that I didn’t expect.

The characters evolved. One of my favourite things to see in a good book is characters who grow and change over the course of the narrative. The female protagonist started out as as shy, wide-eyed 18 year old fresh from leaving school. By the end she was bold, confident, and willing to put herself out there and try anything to get what she wants – thanks to the people she’s met to help her grow during the year.

Things I Didn’t Like:

Not much, actually! It was a very sweet story with some likeable characters and some really wonderful moments. If you’re looking for a beach read this summer – this should be it!

“And that’s when I understand that I have been stained. Whether I’m still in love with him, whether he was ever in love with me, and no matter who he’s in love with now, Willem changed my life. He showed me how to get lost, and then I showed myself how to get found.”
